- BY JAMES GILBERT @YSJAMESGILBERT

Somerton/Cocopah firefighters had to use a hydraulic power tool to pry the driver from his vehicle Wednesday afternoon following a two-car collision that left his door crumpled and unable to be opened.

The crash, according to information provided by Fire Chief Paul De Anda of the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department, happened at approximately 12:02 p.m. at Avenue G and County 17th.

Upon firefighters’ arrival on scene, they found a white full-sized pickup truck with front-end damage on the east side of the intersection. A silver compact sedan was on the southwest side of the intersection.

The silver sedan had what De Anda described as significant damage to the front driver’s side quarter panel that extended across the driver’s side door, which left the driver trapped inside the vehicle.

The passenger was also trapped due to the door of the vehicle being partially blocked by a telephone pole.

Firefighters used a hydraulic power tool to open the driver’s side door and a pry tool to get the passenger door dislodged from the telephone pole that was blocking it.

The driver of the silver sedan stated that he was headed southbound on Avenue G when the white pickup truck, which was stopped at the intersection headed west, suddenly entered the intersection, striking the sedan.

He complained of having had a momentary loss of consciousness and pain to his right shoulder and neck. The female passenger complained of pain to her right shoulder, back, neck and head.

The driver of the white pickup truck stated he was uninjured and refused treatment.

Both occupants of the silver sedan were transported to Yuma Regional Medical Center by a San Luis Fire Department ambulance.
