Community members who have a love of golf can put their hobby toward raising breast cancer awareness next weekend at the 21st annual Rally for the Cure Women’s Golf Clinic.

The clinic is slated to take place on Saturday, Feb. 17, at Desert Hills Golf Course, 1245 W. Desert Hills Drive.

Sign in is at 8 a.m. and the clinic starts at 9 a.m. and will last until 2 p.m. The entry fee is $40 per person and the registration deadline is Feb. 10. Registration is limited to the first 75 golfers.

Local golf professionals will be available to provide women with instructions. Additionally, there will be prizes, raffle items and more.

“Rich Walton is our lead instructor and he brings in some pros from around the area and Southern California,” said Andrew Smith, golf operations manager at Desert Hills Golf Course. “He will also bring a former female professional who comes in and helps. We will have six to seven instructors.”

The clinic will include demonstrations on the driving range, putting instruction on long and short putts. In addition, there will be drills, chipping, pitching, bunkers and drills in a short game and woods, irons, club fitting and drills in a full swing.

Lunch will also be provided and a guest speaker, to be announced, will be part of the day’s activities. Those over the age of 16 can register, Smith said.

“It doesn’t matter what level player a person is,” Smith noted. “They can be a straight beginner. It is a golf clinic but it’s also a lot of fun. We do a lot of laughing and carrying on.

“It’s a serious subject obviously,” he added. “We are raising money for breast cancer research and awareness, but we want to have a good time while we are doing it and make sure people learn along the way.”

Each year, the local event can raise anywhere from $4,000 to 8,000 for breast cancer awareness and research, Smith said. Along with raising funds, Smith said participants will go home after forming new bonds.

“They are going to meet some people they don’t know and maybe pick up some golfing partners,” Smith said. “They are going to learn a lot of golf skills in a short amount of time. We put them through four or five different stations throughout the clinic.”

Proceeds from the clinic will go toward Susan G. Komen, an organization that aims to address breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives, according to the organization’s website.
