Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun
• Thumbs up to APS/Phoenix Suns, which recently gave a grant to the young gardeners at Orange Grove Elementary School.
• Thumbs up to Somerton and San Luis, which recently were ranked in the top 5 safest cities in the state by the National Council for Home Safety and Security. Congrats!
• Thumbs up to the students who competed in the Yuma County Science and Engineering Expo at Arizona Western College. With nearly 500 projects entered, it’s great to see students taking an interest in science!
• Thumbs up to the Philadelphia Eagles and Quarterback Nick Foles (a former University of Arizona quarterback, by the way!) for winning their first Super Bowl last Sunday!
• Thumbs up to Somerton Middle School’s wrestling team, which won the team title in the state tournament in Tucson! Congratulations to our student athletes!
• Thumbs up to the Yuma County athletes headed to state this weekend! Best of luck to you all!
• Thumbs up to the $10,000 reward now being offered by the Arizona Advisory Committee on Arson Prevention and the Arizona Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators in the Mesa Heights arson case. Hopefully, that’s incentive to bring some new information forward in the case!
• Thumbs down to ongoing flu season. It’s a rough one out there, readers, so take action: wash your hands, and if you haven’t done so yet, go get your flu vaccination.
• Thumbs down to the news that Amberly’s Place had an increase in reports of abuse in 2017 — but thumbs up to the fact that the agency is in place to help victims begin their journeys to recovery.
• Thumbs down to the battle between Spectrum and Northwest Broadcast, which has left Yuma subscribers without NBC and CBS programming for the last week.
