Yuma Sun

First Take

- By Grady Garrett, sports editor

First of all, what a weekend; maybe the greatest in local high school sports history. Three teams won state championships (Gila Ridge/Yuma Catholic boys soccer, Yuma High wrestling), a third soccer team (YC girls) played for a championship, and six wrestlers won individual titles as well. Congratulations to all. Here’s a fun side note of a thought.

Imagine how bizarre this seems from the outside: an isolated area of eight high schools has two state champions in the same sport, and they’re only separated by one classification, yet those teams don’t ever play each other.

That’s not to beat a dead horse. There have been plenty of dream YCYUHSD matchups in the past that have made sense but not happened, but no more obvious/realistic example — this isn’t asking 6A and 3A to play each other — than this Gila Ridge-YC boys soccer.

It won’t happen. I’m just saying, you see how it’d seem very bizarre?
