YC girls basketball falls in 1st round at state

AWC softball splits at Central Ariz.

The Yuma Catholic girls basketball team’s season came to an end Tuesday night with a 67-25 loss at No. 12 Monument Valley in the first round of the 3A state tournament.

The No. 21 Shamrocks (10-8 AIA), who were making their third straight state appearance, were held to just two points in the first quarter and trailed 33-15 at the half.

Monument Valley (9-10) moves on to face No. 5 Holbrook in the second round.

MORE PREP BASKETBALL YC boys, San Pasqual girls in state

With the Yuma Catholic girls loss, there are just two local prep basketball teams whose seasons are still alive: Yuma Catholic’s boys and San Pasqual’s girls. Yuma Catholic’s boys team (7-9 AIA) received the No. 20 seed in the 24-team 3A state tournament, and will play at No. 13 Safford (8-9) at 6:30 p.m. today. San Pasqual’s girls team qualified for state for the first time since 2007, making the 16-team 1A field as the No. 5 seed. The Warriors (12-4 AIA) will face West region opponent and fifth-seeded Valley Lutheran (16-1) at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley. Valley Lutheran won the teams’ regularsea­son meeting, 52-31, on Jan. 22.

JUCO SOFTBALL AWC splits at Central Arizona

The Arizona Western softball team salvaged a split Tuesday against preseason No. 4-ranked Central Arizona in Coolidge, winning 6-5 in game two after losing 9-1 in the opener.

Koryne Coddington took the loss in game one, allowing four unearned runs on four hits and two walks in three innings; Nadia Hernandez pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up five runs (four earned) on three hits and two walks. Offensivel­y, Makenna Stram had two of the Matadors’ six hits.
