Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to Carefree Village Resort, which recently donated a book to every student at Alice Byrne Elementary School — 365 in all. Resident Sue Segura also brought in author and illustrator Georgia Graham to present to the students!

• Thumbs up to the Yuma County middle school students who competed at the MathCounts annual competition!

• Thumbs up to the renovations underway at Kofa High School, which will modernize the campus. Changes ahead include tennis courts, a new auxiliary gym, updates to the Career and Technical Education building, a renovated student hub, a new culinary arts classroom, and a new classroom building with updated technology, flexible features, and modern academic and lab spaces.

• Thumbs up to the city of Yuma, which was recently named Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. A city with bike paths helps boost outdoor activity, and can lead to a healthier community — that’s a win-win for all.

• Thumbs up to Centennial Middle School, which has found a discipline model that’s paying positive returns. Officials report that Level 3 offenses such as fighting, insubordination, drugs/alcohol and sexual harassment are down significantly two years after implementing the program, which is terrific news!

• Thumbs down to the orange signs still up all over the city, stuck to fences and posts, promoting an event that happened in January. Organizers need to take responsibility, and get those signs down, pronto.

• Thumbs down to the crazy traffic backups lately on 24th Street, especially right around 5 p.m. Yes, that’s Yuma’s “Rush Hour,” such as it is, but it shouldn’t take 20 minutes to drive through three intersections.

• Thumbs down to both Spectrum and Northwest Broadcasting, for failing to resolve the dispute that led to dropping the CBS, NBC and Estrella channels from Spectrum’s lineup. What an incredible disservice to their customers by all parties involved.

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
