Navy Sea Chanters to perform concert in Yuma

- BY JAMES GILBERT @YSJAMESGILBERT

The United States Navy Band Sea Chanters will stage a show in the City of Yuma next month as part of their 2018 Winter tour.

Yuma is one of only 12 cities in three states chosen to host a performance from the band — which Senior Chief Musician Melissa Bishop, communication manager for the U.S. Navy Band Public Affairs Office, said is a much loved signature outreach program of the Navy.

The performance, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. March 7 at Yuma Civic Center. While no one in the band is from Yuma, three of its members are from Arizona.

Senior Chief Musician Adam Tyler is from Phoenix, Chief Musician Beth Revell from Bullhead City and Chief Musician Caroline Evans from Flagstaff.

The U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters is the official chorus of America’s Navy. The ensemble performs a variety of music ranging from traditional choral music, including sea chanteys and patriotic fare, to opera, Broadway and contemporary music.

“Our shows are entertaining and family-friendly with a wide variety of music,” Bishop said. “We take an opportunity during every performance to honor veterans. It’s important for us to come together with communities to celebrate the service of those who have served in our Armed Forces.”

The Sea Chanters chorus is frequently found at the center of highprofile national events. At home in Washington, D.C., the group performs for the president, vice president, and numerous congressional, military and foreign dignitaries.

Bishop said all of the band’s primary performing units take to the countryside each year, allowing the band to reach out to audiences in areas where crowds won’t normally get the chance to see the Navy Band strut its stuff.

“Through our concerts, we demonstrate the professionalism, skill and dedication possessed by more than 320,000 active-duty sailors in the Navy,” Bishop said. “They are hard at work, around the world, around the clock, protecting and defending our country on the world’s oceans. We’re very happy to be able to perform in Yuma on March 7.”

The Sea Chanters are exclusively comprised of enlisted sailors who are not only doing what they love to do, but serving their country at the same time.
