Marine life photos on display at San Luis border
Exhibit includes 26 pictures of fish and other sea creatures
SAN LUIS RIO COLORADO, Son. — The motorists who line up to cross the border to the United States can now use the wait time to appreciate the marine life of the Sea of Cortes, thanks to a photo exhibit.
The Urban Gallery, an outdoor exhibition area along the border fence passed by lines of U.S.bound vehicles, is currently displaying “Buceando en el Alto Golfo de California” (“Diving in the Upper Gulf of California”), a collection of underwater photographs taken by photographer Glenn Thompson.
The exhibition consists of 26 photographs of fish and other sea life captured through the lens of Thompson in the upper reaches of the sea between the Baja California peninsula and the west coast of Sonora.
Put up on exhibition in late January, the collection is scheduled to remain on exhibit for four months along the border fence next to Carlos G. Calles Avenue, between 2nd and 12th streets.
The Sea of Cortes is part of the Biosphere Reserve, an environmentally protected area in the waters between Sonora and Baja California, and has what is considered some of the most diversified marine life in Mexico.
The exhibit was funded by the city of San Luis Rio Colorado and Sonora State Commission of Ecology and Sustainable Development.
Larizza Figueroa, head of the city’s culture department, said Thompson’s photographs previously were well-received at an exhibit at the Regional Museum in San Luis Rio Colorado, prompting the city to exhibit them again along the border fence.
