- FROM STAFF REPORTS @YUMASUNSPORTS

The Arizona Western softball team appears to have put its early-season struggles completely in the past.

The Matadors extended their current winning streak to five games Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of traditional Arizona Community College Athletic Conference power Phoenix College on the road, winning game one 12-10 and game two 5-4.

AWC (14-9 overall, 8-4 ACCAC) jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings of the first game, and was able to hold off a late Phoenix rally that saw the Bears (10-3, 7-3) score six runs in the final two innings to cut into what was a 10-4 deficit.

The Matadors racked up 16 hits that first game; Makenna Stram went 4-for5, Allison Betty with 3-for-4, Danielle Burgos went 3-for5 with three RBIs, Michelle Roldan went 2-for-3 and Koryne Coddington drove in four runs. Stram was the winning pitcher, allowing 10 runs (5 earned) on eight hits and three walks over seven innings.

The second game followed a different script, as AWC trailed 4-2 after five innings but rallied for three runs in the sixth and again held on for the win. Roldan (1 HR), Stram and Betty collected two hits each, while Yassiel Lazo had three RBIs. Coddington (6 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 6 K) earned the complete-game victory.

Since opening the season with six losses in their first eight games, the Matadors have won 12 of 15. They next play Saturday at home against Yavapai.
