Saturday event will honor Black History Month
Celebration will be at MLK Center
As February comes to a close, community members are being invited to celebrate Black History Month this Saturday at the Martin Luther King Center.
Hosted by the Yuma Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the event is scheduled to take place from 4 to 6 p.m. at the center located at 300 S. 13th Ave.
The event is free to attend and will commemorate and honor integral figures in black history by offering information and featuring key persons.
According to the Black History Month website, February marks the Black History Month annual observance and it is held as a tribute to men and women who have made significant contributions to America and the rest of the world in various fields such as science, politics, arts and more.
The NAACP was founded in 1909 with the mission to “ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of all persons and eliminate racebased discrimination,” the organization’s website shows.
The local chapter, #1016, has been in operation for about 84 years.
The group aims to contribute to the community with various projects and has assisted students with funds to reach educational goals.
