Hernandez leads San Luis baseball to win in opener

Led by Gerardo Hernandez’s all-around performanc­e, the San Luis baseball team opened its season Thursday with a 2-1 victory over Buckeye Union at the Laveen Classic.

Hernandez racked up 10 strikeouts in a completega­me effort on the mound, and offensivel­y he went 3-for-3 with an inside-thepark home run. He also scored the game’s winning run when he came in on a Hernan Yanez RBI single in the top of the sixth.

Daniel Urbieta was the Kings’ top performer with two hits and two RBIs; Robert Martinez (4 IP, 5 R) took the loss on the mound in this Adam Donnenfiel­d Tournament opener.

Gila Ridge 8, Arcadia 3

Anthony Yee (2-for-3), Ramces Urias (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) and Jordan Canales (2-for-4, 1 RBI) led the way offensivel­y for the Hawks, who were also playing their first game at the Adam Donnenfiel­d Tournament.

Andres Cota pitched the first four innings and allowed just one run before giving way to Dale Tschigg, who went the final three innings and got credit for the win; both runs he allowed were unearned.

Ironwood Ridge 18, Yuma High 3

Gabriel Villarreal had two hits for the Criminals, who were playing their first game at the Cowboy Up Invitation­al.

PREP SOFTBALL Cibola wins first 2 games

Playing at the Dobson Westwood Invitation­al, Cibola’s softball team opened its season Thursday with lopsided victories over Mesa (13-0) and Williams Field (15-1).

In the Mesa game, Hailey Oros had three hits while five Raiders — Christina Robles, Kamryn Moctezuma, Ela Henry, Madison Matthews and Cielo Echols — had two each. Kelly Katalbas (3 IP) and Ginelle Cordova (2 IP) combined to toss a no-hitter.

In the Williams Field game, Nicole Villa, Robles, Henry and Kaleiah Tatlonghar­i all had three hits each. Alanie Ornelas started the game in the circle and allowed just two hits in four innings.

Gila Ridge goes 1-1

Gila Ridge’s softball team is also at the DobsonWest­wood Invite, going 1-1 Thursday with an 11-3 win over Westwood and a 9-3 loss to Poston Butte.

The Hawks racked up 31 hits on the day as a team.
