Four lanes needed on Highway 95

Roadway a busy one, no matter the time of year

- PAT POWELL JOYCE GRAHAM AND DAUGHTERS D.J. PEMBROKE

Most Yumans and visitors alike can agree on one thing: Highway 95 is a busy roadway.

Anyone who has driven from Yuma to Yuma Proving Ground, or headed north to Interstate 10 can attest to the frequent congestion.

On weekdays, the highway is heavily populated with those who work at YPG, and the congestion continues on the weekends. Boaters, campers and fishing enthusiasts travel to Martinez Lake and Fisher’s Landing, while others head to destinations north of Yuma, such as checking out the gem shows in Quartzsite or hiking near Palm Canyon. Winter, summer, spring or fall — there is rarely a break on Highway 95.

Recently, the Arizona State Transportation Board met in Yuma, and local officials pleaded the case to have Highway 95 expanded to four lanes.

The top priority would be an expansion from Yuma through to Yuma Proving Ground, but in an ideal world, four lanes of highway would stretch all the way up to Quartzsite.

Considering the fact that Yuma Proving Ground is one of the biggest employers in the county, it’s important to make sure the infrastructure is in place to support the demand there.

Officials note that the daily traffic count from Araby Road to Yuma Proving Ground was 8,005 — which is a significant number.

There are a variety of roadways in Yuma County in need of maintenance, such as repaving, but when one thinks of road widening, Highway 95 is in need of the most attention.

During the Arizona State Transportation Board’s recent meeting in Yuma, local officials emphasized their concerns about Highway 95, and the message appeared to resonate with the board, which is good news for area drivers.

Even though the meeting is over, Yumans can still let the board know their thoughts on Highway 95. Send them an email at boardinfo@azdot.gov, or give the board a call at 602-712-7550.

Hopefully, Yumans’ participation will eventually lead to a four-lane future on Highway 95.

DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS OR NOT?

I would like to thank the Yuma sanitation crews for all their hard work in picking up our garbage.

I think it is a wonderful thing you do here to pick up all the unwanted refuse from our home once a year. It helps the people here to keep their homes clean and neat.

Monday was a holiday, and the rest of the week the crews work longer hours to pick up the same amount of garbage by Friday night. The garbage really smells if left out in the sun long.

When we first started to come here in the winter, we didn’t know how to do recycling and had to hunt a long time to find out where to bring it. Now a blue dumpster sits in the yard just for the recycling and is picked up every week. Thank you!

Also, my husband loves the Southwest and at various times we have found ourselves going through Yuma heading somewhere. Through the years I have seen your town grow bigger, but always it was covered with dirt and Walmart bags in the bushes. In the last 10 years I have seen it get sidewalks, curbs, drains, landscaping along the road and it is much cleaner than ever before. I like the lovely park along the river. The first time I saw the Foothills, it was a fancy sign out on the desert with little flags in the sand. Now it’s a whole town by itself. Congratulations, city fathers on your progress. Life Care Center here in Yuma.

Everyone was very caring and comforting to Robert Graham before his passing, and the family appreciated all the care he received there.

Come on, Yuma Proving Ground, what are you doing? I think you goofed. You have a 75th birthday celebration, and about 1,000 people showed up (I guess). You have good food available, good drink available, and beautiful weather. You have tons of security patrolling. I even saw a security military dog walking the grounds. There was even a person on top of the barracks watching everything.

Now, how did you goof up? With all of this going on, and everyone seeming to have a good time … no one got shot, no one got run over, no one had a disagreement with anyone else … hmmm. Actually, I with some others was there, and yes, we had a special day. Everything was just as a birthday should be.

A very big thank you goes out to the people in charge of the event. Now this is how to have a get-together. I can’t wait until next year — I hope this will be repeated. Thank you, YPG, for allowing us to come to your backyard to party. You guys did it up right!
