Pen-pricks

• Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman got my vote for Best Actor after enjoying his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour on Monday. The immortal Englishman saved our culture. If Hitler had won World War II most Americans would be speaking German today instead of Spanish.

• California’s Department of Motor Vehicles said that driverless cars could be on the road as early as April. Wait’ll it happens in Tennessee. With the advent of driverless vehicles, it’s only a matter of time before a country music singer writes a song about your truck leaving you, too.

Regarding scan and go technology: Seeing as this new technology would most likely lead to few employees it should also reduce the business expense of paying those employees so I actually have a question about the concept...

Will the lower business expense lead to a lower price for the customers??

The election of Donald Trump was evidence of a new paradigm, one not purely Republican nor totally adverse to Democratic ideals. One aspects of this paradigm is in our trade agreements. Traditionally, Republicans have been pro-business at the expense of labor. On the other hand, Democrats have been the beacon of the working class for decades.

However, after eight years of absolute Democratic power, little had changed. Like the DACA (Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals) legislation, shovel-ready jobs never materialized and the gross inequalities of NAFTA and “Free Trade” continued.

What a difference an administration makes. For the first time in over ten years the economy is on track and good paying jobs are returning to American soil.

This president amazes me. He isn’t stigmatized by labels. While pro-business he’s not anti-labor. Maybe because he was in construction he understands it’s not a choice between business or labor. To be successful in business you must have a well-trained and prosperous workforce.

I was watching C-SPAN and caught a segment on higher education. There is a new educational model gaining traction around the country: P-TECH which stands for pathway to technology. It is a publicprivate partnership that provides kids with an opportunity to gain real-world experience in the workplace and ultimately graduate with a 6 year degree (High School plus an AA degree).

No more “blue collar” or “white collar” labels. You might call it “new collar.” These kids are employable right out of the gate and they have no student debt. Some of the areas discussed were the areas of AI (artificial intelligence), Blockchain for business, cybersecurity, and healthcare. Many of the jobs in the future won’t require a 4-year degree. The pace of technology is changing so rapidly that a 10-year-old kid entering the workforce 10 years from now most likely won’t recognize skills needed for the future. That’s where the model will work: It is a fluid, dynamic educational model to keep up with an ever changing economy. No falling behind the curve. “Don’t protect the past and don’t define yourself as the product. Define yourself as the solution.”
