Somerton names new city administrator

- BY CESAR NEYOY BAJO EL SOL

SOMERTON — Ian McGaughey is scheduled to assume his post as Somerton’s new city administrator at the end of April.

McGaughey, currently town manager for Clifton, Ariz., was recently hired by the Somerton City Council on a 4-0 vote.

McGaughey, who has held his current post since 2015, brings 13 years of government experience to his new job. He previously served in tribal government in Alaska.

He was chosen over five other candidates for the post, which has been filled on an interim basis by Somerton Economic Development Director Hector Tapia since September, when then-City Administrator Bill Lee resigned.

“I can say that we had very good candidates, but in my opinion (McGaughey) was the best,” Somerton City Councilman Miguel Villalpando said. “We expect that he can bring stability to the administration, because we know that most of (the city departments) are working well and that services are being maintained. But stability has been lacking in that position.”

Joining Villalpando in voting to pick McGaughey were Mayor Jose Yepez and Councilmen Gerardo Anaya and Carlos Gonzalez. Council members Martha Garcia, Luis Galindo and Jesus Roldan were not present for the vote.

“I feel honored by the selection by the city council,” McGaughey said. “It is a great honor. Somerton is a growing community that has maintained its small town roots and a clear sense of civic pride.”

He said he is looking forward to working with the council, the city staff and the community to bring about a bright future for the city.

McCaughey was given a fouryear contract with a starting salary of $108,000.

Born in Virginia and raised in upstate New York, McGaughey holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from American University and a master’s in public administration from Arkansas State University.
