Cibola, San Luis high schools see ‘Hamilton’ at ASU theater
Two Cibola High School students took to the stage recently before a performance of the Broadway musical “Hamilton.”
Cibola and San Luis high students were among more than 2,700 students across the state who experienced the “Hamilton Education Program” at Arizona State University’s Gammage Auditorium on Feb. 23.
Prior to the show, students participated in a lengthy Q&A session with cast members and the company’s costume designer, and watched student performances inspired by “Hamilton.” Among those performing were Cibola students Mallory Lemmon and Seth Sanders. The duo sang an original composition titled “Perfect Eliza” with Lemmon playing an accompanying acoustic guitar.
In addition to a large group of fine arts students from Cibola, San Luis High School brought 75 AP History students to the show. One of San Luis’ pre-submitted questions was asked during the Q&A session.
“It was an amazing day,” SLHS Principal Tamara Ray said. “And truly a powerful and impactful experience for our students. We had a great team and a great group of students. I will never forget this day. I am certain the same is true for our students.”
Made possible through a grant by The Rockefeller Foundation to the Gilder Lehrman Institute, high school students in Title I schools in selected cities each pay just $10 (a “Hamilton”) to see the performance of the smash Broadway musical.
“Hamilton” is the story of America’s Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. Featuring a score that blends hiphop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway, “Hamilton” is the story of America then, as told by America now.
