County board to auction 70 properties Monday

- BY BLAKE HERZOG @BLAKEHERZOG

The Yuma County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting 9 a.m. Monday to auction 70 tax-deeded properties which are now owned by the state, after their previous owners defaulted on property taxes.

Most of the parcels are in east county subdivisions; El Camino Del Sol and Sun Country Acres in Dateland and New Tacna Townsite and Citrus Park in the Tacna area. Taxes owed on most of the properties are in the range of $800 to $3,000, though $21,000 is owed on one property in Desert Foothills Estates.

The lots will be sold individually or in bulk to the highest bidder at the meeting, which begins 9 a.m. in the Board of Supervisors auditorium at 198 S. Main St., Yuma. Written bids were accepted by the county through Feb. 26, and bidding will start at the highest written bid, if one was received.

The board will also auction five county-owned properties along 40th Street between Foothills Boulevard and Avenue 12E.

The lots, four of them about 11,500 square feet and the fifth 5,342 square feet, were purchased to secure right-of-way for a road reconstruction project, and the necessary right-of-way has been removed from the parcels.

Officials attempted to auction off all five of the properties in November 2010, but no valid bids were made. Last May the board tried to auction off one, 12104 S. Renee Ave., and again there were no bids.

The county has since hired a real estate firm to market the properties and the agents have found there is interest in the land now, according to a staff report.

More information on both auctions is available at yumacountyaz.gov, by going to the “Calendar” tab and selecting the March 12 “SPECIAL SESSION Yuma County Board of Supervisors” icon (another event labeled “Yuma County Board of Supervisors Special Session” does not include the information).

These are the only items on Monday’s agenda.

The meeting will be broadcast on the county’s cable channel, Yuma77, and webcast and available for later viewing at www.yumacountyaz.gov and the Yuma County Government Facebook page. Spanish subtitles are shown on rebroadcasts.
