A contract for afterschool programming is on the agenda for District 1’s governing board meeting Monday.

The gathering is set to start at 5:30 p.m. at the district’s offices at 450 W. 6th St. in Yuma.

The board may consider approving an agreement for the Right at School program, which provides before and after-school enrichment. The board heard a presentation from a representative of the company at its February meeting.

The board is considering the company due to President Donald Trump’s renewed call for cutting the 21st Century Community Learning program, which according to The Associated Press, provides before and after-school care to about 1.7 million students in high-poverty rural and urban districts nationwide. Several school districts and youth centers in Yuma County participate in the program, including Crane, Somerton and Gadsden.

The board will also hear from the Yuma Community Foundation that has awarded a grant to the district’s Advancement Via Individual Determination program. CFO Denis Ponder will discuss the monthly budget and enrollment reports and update the board on the student growth it has experienced this year and how that relates to the budget.

Nominees for Teachers of the Year will be recognized; and Ron Watson Middle School students will “showcase” their accomplishments so far this year.

Superintendent Jamie Sheldahl will also introduce Mary Beth Turner, the district’s preschool director, to speak about its new and continuing programs.

Board members will hear a second reading of Policy DKC and may approve an appointment to the NorthStar board of directors. NorthStar is a Yuma-created enrichment program for children living in the northern areas of Yuma. In addition, the board will hear about several new policy advisories.

Under Arizona law, the board may convene into executive session to discuss personnel matters or to consult with the school district’s attorney. A copy of the agenda background material provided to board members (with the exception of material relating to possible executive sessions) is available for public inspection at Yuma School District One Administration Office, 450 W. 6th St.
