YUHSD CTE students visit Arizona legislature
Career and Technical Education students from around Yuma Union High School District recently wrapped up CTE Month with a trip to the Arizona State Capitol on Feb. 27.
The trip included separate legislative appointments with Reps. Charlene Fernandez and Darin Mitchell and Sen. Bill Kerr; a visit to the House Democratic Caucus; and tours of the capital, including the library and Wesley Bowen Memorial Plaza.
“It was a great trip,” said YUHSD CTE Coordinator Lorie Honeycutt. “It was another opportunity to advocate for Career and Technical Education, our students’ CTE Programs and our school district.”
In addition to the trip, YUHSD CTE had a packed schedule of events throughout February.
Cibola High School’s FFA took part in the District Career Development Event competition at Arizona Western College, made a presentation to the YUHSD Governing Board along with Yuma High School and Gila Ridge High School, attended the Ag Summit and volunteered at the annual Harvest Dinner. SkillsUSA students attended the Auto S.T.E.M. Day at the Drag Races in Chandler.
San Luis High School held several on-campus activities to promote CTE as well. They handed out “Thank You” postcards and unique coffee mugs to all SLHS CTE teachers on Valentine’s Day, represented their respective Career and Technical Student Organizations with dress up days, passed out flyers and organized activities at lunch to generate student interest.
CTE Month is a public awareness campaign that takes place each February to celebrate the value of CTE and the achievements and accomplishments of CTE programs across the country.
