High school district board to discuss security

The Yuma Union High School District governing board will consider several items on the upcoming 2018-2019 school year at its meeting Wednesday.

The district’s governing body will convene at 5:15 p.m. at the Yuma High School library, 400 S. 6th Ave., for its monthly business meeting.

Superinten­dent Gina Thompson will update the board on safety and security after a perceived social media threat forced the closure of Gila Ridge High School on Feb. 27.

The board may approve an agreement with the City of San Luis for a school resource officer for San Luis High School. The board may also OK course descriptio­ns and course fees for the coming year. A proposed change in athletic fees will be presented during the meeting, but the board will not vote on that item.

The board may approve the 20182019 open enrollment capacity; that year’s Parent/Student handbook; and a utility easement for Arizona Public Service. The board may also adopt a policy on using technology resources in instructio­n.

The financial department will present the Auditor General’s Dollars in the Classroom report, as well as update the board on the district’s budget. Facilities will present informatio­n on district bond projects, including work at the new Vista High School and District Administra­tive Offices on Avenue A. A “topping” ceremony is set for noon Thursday to lay the final brick in the building. Vista Alternativ­e High School Laura Campbell will also address the board.

Guidance counselor Ginny Legros and Lili Campa will present on the Yellow Ribbon project, a teen suicide prevention effort.

A study session is to be set for either March 21 or March 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. The board’s next meeting will be at 5:15 April 12 in the cafeteria of Yuma High.

The board’s meetings are open to the public with the exception of executive sessions.

Informatio­n on agenda items are available for public inspection at the offices of the superinten­dent, which are currently on the premises of Yuma High School.
