Work on Araby Rd. slated for this week

Lane closures expected to begin today

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Yuma drivers should plan ahead for lane closures on Araby Road until Friday for pre-construction utility relocation work.

A utility contractor is scheduled to relocate the fiber-optic lines on northbound Araby between Interstate 8 and 32nd Street as the Arizona Department of Transportation prepares for the second phase of construction of the I-8 and Araby Road traffic interchange improvement project.

Northbound Araby Road will be narrowed to one lane in the work zone from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Friday. Both southbound lanes will remain open.

A 12-foot vehicle-width restriction will be in place.

Delays are possible, so motorists should consider using alternate routes. Drivers should slow down, obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices, and use caution around construction personnel and equipment.

The roundabout, which is scheduled for completion by November, will connect the eastbound I-8 ramps, Araby Road and Gila Ridge Road.

Last fall, crews built another roundabout serving the north side of I-8 and connecting Araby with the westbound I-8 ramps. Both roundabouts are designed to accommodate large trucks, farming equipment and recreational vehicles, and are expected to improve safety and traffic flow.
