Gila Ridge baseball scores 3 in 7th to beat Buckeye Union

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Sometimes it takes a bounce or two to go in your favor to win a game.

The Gila Ridge baseball team learned this on Tuesday with a 5-4 walk-off win over Buckeye. Gila Ridge trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh inning before Buckeye fell apart.

“The guys never gave up and we just kept playing,” Gila Ridge coach James Kuzniak said. “We made some big plays when we had to, and a little bit of luck was on our side, but we’ll take it.” Walker Mellon started the bottom of the seventh off by being hit by a pitch, and Andres Cota followed that up with a double to make the game 4-3.

Dom Avila followed that with a single to score Cota and tie the game, and two passed balls helped Avila advance to third base.

The next batter would walk and the catcher missed the ball on that pitch, allowing Avila to steal home for the win.

Cota led the team at 2-for-2 with an RBI. Avila was 1-for-3 with an RBI and run.

Cota pitched 6 2/3 innings with two earned runs and seven strikeouts. Dale Tshigg earned the win with 1/3 of an inning pitched.
