Cibola softball beats D. Vista

The Cibola softball team avenged last year’s seasonendi­ng loss to Desert Vista with a 7-1 victory over the Thunder in Phoenix on Wednesday.

Madison Mathews hit a three-run home run, Anglea Oros and Ela Henry had three hits each, and Christena Robles, Kamryn Moctezuma and Mathews had two hits each. Robles had an inside-the-park home run.

Kelly Katalbas allowed only two hits to pick up the complete-game win.

The Raiders, who entered the game ranked No. 4 in 6A, improved to 10-0 AIA with the victory. Desert Vista, which last year knocked Cibola out of the 6A state tournament after the Raiders won the teams’ regular-season meeting, dropped to just 1-6 AIA this year with Wednesday’s loss.

MORE PREP SOFTBALL Kofa 10, Williams Field 2

Chloe Garcia (3-for-4, HR, 4 RBIs), Alyssa Sergent (3for-3, 3 RBIs) and Sam Morales (3-for-3, 2B, RBI) led the way offensivel­y for the Kings, who improved to 3-5 AIA with the win.

Morales earned the win in the circle, allowing just five hits and one earned run.

PREP BASEBALL Kofa 15, Williams Field 2

Israel Linder had three doubles and five RBIs to lead the way for the Kings offensivel­y. Six players collected one hit each, including Alexis Torres (solo HR) and Daniel Ruiz (2 RBIs).

Nick Rehkopf pitched all seven innings, giving up one earned run on seven hits while striking out seven.

PREP GIRLS TENNIS Cibola 6, Kofa 3

The Raiders (7-3 AIA, 3-0 section) won four of six singles matches and two of three doubles matches. Their singles winners were: No. 1 Amulya Doniparthi (6-2, 6-1 over Valeria Anguiano), No. 2 Sarah Trujillo (6-3, 6-0 over Nataly Prieto), No. 3 Jovanna Concepcion and No. 4 Natalie Scott. Doniparthi and Trujillo also defeated Anguiano and Prieto 8-1 in the No. 1 doubles match.
