Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to the sponsors, businesses and organizations who participated in the Free Little Library project around Yuma County! We are so excited to have this project off the ground! And, if you need a book, or want to leave a book (or two or three!), visit www.littlefreelibrary.org to find a library near you!

• Thumbs up to Yuma County’s Pelfrey family, which has multiple members who have become firefighters. It’s a tough career that takes dedication, and it’s amazing to see so many members of one family take part!

• Thumbs up to Kofa High student Abigail Rojo, who is competing in the Spanish-language talent search show “Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento!” Best of luck, Abigail!

• Thumbs up to those who volunteer at Yuma Regional Medical Center! Your support of the hospital and its patients is much appreciated!

• Thumbs up to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who is pushing to legalize hemp as an agricultural commodity. The crop was once used as an ingredient for rope, clothing, mulch, cooking oil, soap, lotion, building materials, animal bedding and more, the Associated Press reports, and has the potential to be a profitable crop for farmers today.

• Thumbs up to Yuma, Jackson, Wyo., and El Centro, which have filed a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission against Charter Communications, parent company of Spectrum, over the ongoing standoff between Spectrum and Northwest Broadcasting.

• Thumbs up to Major League Baseball, which is now officially back in season!

• And speaking of MLB, thumbs up (we think!) to Texas Rangers’ new Dilly Dog: a dill pickle, hollowed out and stuffed with a hot dog, which is then battered and deep fried. Think “corn dog” with a bonus layer of pickle. Delicious? Decadadent? Deadly? That remains to be seen — but points to the Rangers’ concessions team for coming up with something interesting!

• Thumbs up to the traffic light at Avenue B and County 19th Street! Lights such as this do much to help prevent accidents on our county roads.

• Thumbs down to the perpetual staff shuffling under the Trump Administration at the White House. How can one accomplish anything if the players are always changing?

Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
