Three people died and another 12 were injured in 13 highway and offroading accidents that occurred in and around El Golfo de Santa Clara, Son., over the Easter weekend.

Two of the three people were residents of San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora. They were killed when the vehicle they were driving ran off the highway near El Golfo and struck a utility pole Saturday afternoon, according to the San Luis Rio Colorado Fire Department.

They were identified as Natividad Gonzalez and Ivan Galvez. Two unidentified passengers, both female, were injured.

The afternoon of Easter Sunday an unidentified man was killed when the all-terrain vehicle he was riding on the streets of El Golfo was struck by a pickup truck.

The accidents occurred even as municipal, state and federal police agencies assigned extra officers to El Golfo, a tiny fishing community on the Sea of Cortez that draws tens of thousands of beachgoers during Easter and other holidays.

Other accidents included a rollover at dawn Sunday that left three people injured, and another in which two people were hurt when the vehicle they were driving fell abruptly after climbing a hill. Both accidents occurred in El Machorro, a sandy area near El Golfo that is popular with offroaders.

As part of their campaign to prevent accidents over the weekend, police set up checkpoints around El Golfo to remind motorists to drive safely and not drink and drive.

During last year’s Easter holiday weekend at El Golfo, 15 accidents were recorded, but there were no fatalities.
