Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun

-

• Thumbs up to the Yuma County Board of Supervisors, for reviving the Parks and Recreation Commission — the first step in being able to apply for grants for parks on county properties. Parks are positive quality-of-life factors, and important to county residents.

• Thumbs up to the kids who are participating in the Yuma County Fair this week, displaying art, projects, animals and more. Best of luck to each of you — and thanks for your dedication!

• Thumbs up to the 26 Yumans who recently graduated from the Yuma Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy!

• Thumbs up to the City of Yuma, which recently scored a B+ for the overall condition of its roads. However, the city’s pavement score is a 61 out of 100, so some rehabilitation work is still needed.

• Sideways thumb to the City of Yuma, for raising trash pickup fees. Rate raises are often necessary to meet rising costs of doing business; however, residents generally don’t want to pay for those increases. It’s a no-win situation - “rate increase” is never a popular phrase.

• Thumbs down to those people who buy up the discounted ride tickets for the Yuma County Fair, and then resell the tickets for a higher price. What a terrible way to try and make a few extra dollars.

• Thumbs down to the Facebook privacy scandal, after news broke this week that as many as 87 million people may have had their data accessed, as opposed to the 50 million previously disclosed. Facebook needs to do more to secure users’ information, and keep their privacy intact.
