Spring Slurry Seal Project

The City of Yuma Public Works Department will apply a “slurry seal” to extend the life of pavement in area streets starting Mar. 22 through Apr. 8, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Slurry seal is a mixture of asphalt emulsion, water, sand and concrete. It provides a cost-effective new wearing surface that can extend the life of the pavement by approximately five years. The City’s Public Works team has been working in these areas fixing potholes, crack sealing, grinding and doing patchwork to prepare for this springtime project.

The Spring ‘18 Slurry Seal project will include the following streets:

Avenue B, 16th Street to 8th Place (Mar. 30 - Apr. 8)

Avenue C, 16th Street to 12th Street (Mar. 30 - Apr. 8)

Avenue C, Daisy Street to 11th Street (Mar. 30 - Apr. 8)

A 24-hour advance notice will be passed out by the contractor prior to working on your street. Streets will reopen the same day by 5 p.m. Please pass this information to all concerned parties and for any questions or concerns, please call (928) 373-4500.

I-8, Araby Road — ADOT

The Arizona Department of Transporation (ADOT) has started the second phase of work in Yuma to convert the Araby Road interchange at Interstate-8 to modern roundabouts. After a five-month break to accommodate winter agriculture traffic, utility work commenced Monday, Mar. 26, on the south side of I-8. The actual construction of a new roundabout is set to begin in May 2018. The roundabout, which is scheduled for completion by November, will connect the eastbound I-8 ramps, Araby Road and Gila Ridge Road.

During the week of April 9, the southbound lanes will be restricted.

Araby Road, also known as State Route 195, connects I-8 and the San Luis Port of Entry and is a vital corridor for international commerce. The interchange is one of the busiest intersections along I-8 in Yuma, used by about 22,000 vehicles per day. The new design is expected to accommodate increasing traffic in the area through at least 2035.

Alley closure, between Arizona and 1st Avenues

Crews will be replacing a gas service line along south Arizona Avenue for a total of four days, sometime on or after April 9. The project will require the closure of the alley that runs just north of and parallel to 16th Street, between 1st Avenue and Arizona Avenue. The alleyway is used to access some of the businesses off of 16th Street, between 1st and Arizona Avenues. Please consider using an alternate access point, as that alley will be completely closed to traffic.

Avenue A, 32nd Street

The construction of a right turn lane near the intersection of Avenue A and 32nd Street will require a turn lane to be closed for approximately seven days. The project is anticipated to begin on Apr. 5 and to be completed by Apr. 13. While crews are in the workzone, the speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph near the intersection. Signs will be posted to alert traffic of the reduced speed limit and the reduced lanes.

3rd Avenue, 8th to 11th streets

Crews are working on the first phase of improvements to 3rd Avenue, requiring a closure along the roadway between 8th and 11th streets. No through traffic will be permitted. *Please note that access to local businesses in the area will be maintained.

Avenue B, 8th to 16th streets

Coming soon: Starting as early as May 21, crews will be replacing a vintage streel main line requiring a lane closure on Avenue B, from 8th St. to 16th St. Signs will be posted to alert drivres of the upcoming closure as they approach the workzone.

1st-3rd streets, 18th-19th avenues

Crews will be drilling five wells at various locations on 1st, 2nd and 3rd streets. Work is anticipated to take place along these roadways between 19th and 18th avenues, and between Madison and 3rd avenues. The drilling project is to begin on Mar. 27, and is slated to finish by Apr. 10. While work is underway, several shoulder, lane and road closures will be put into place as needed. Traffic signs will be in place to alert drivers to the work zones and traffic changes. Drivers are encouraged to seek an alternate route.

24th St., Arizona Ave.

Beginning as early as March 21, crews will be working near the intersection of 24th Street and Arizona Avenue for a project totaling no more than 60 days. The work will require a lane closure along 24th Street near its intersection with Arizona Avenue and will call for the speed limit to be reduced to 25 mph in the workzone.

28th Street, 21st Drive

A construction project will be taking place near the Tuscany II subdivision near 21st Drive and 28th Street for a sewer and manhole water line installation. There will be a hard road closure on 21st Drive from Mar. 30 to Apr. 8. Additionally, there will be a lane closure on 28th Street near the workzone. The contractor will be notifying Yuma Catholic High School, Gary Knox Elementary School and the Yuma County Main Library regarding any closures along 21st Drive.

Arizona Avenue, 20th-22nd streets

Crews will be placing aerial cables and conducting a variety of related work at a location near Arizona Avenue, between 20th and 22nd streets. The project will require a road closure on 20th Street, between Arizona Avenue and Walnut Avenue. Work is anticipated to take place between Feb. 25 and Apr. 25. Traffic may detour through either Arizona or Walnut avenues, and then take 19th Street instead of 20th Street.

24th St., Avenue B

Crews will be doing overhead utility work near the southwest corner of 24th Street and Avenue B to replace a Spectrum (Time Warner Cable) fiber optic enclosure. Work is to take place between midnight and 6 a.m., and is to be completed by the June 1. Some lane closures may be in place as needed for the project.

I-8 west of 4th Ave. — Caltrans (updated)

Caltrans crews continue to work on the reconstruction of Interstate-8 in Imperial County, west of Yuma. Recently, crews reduced traffic to a single lane on westbound I-8 between Sidewinder Road and about a mile west of Ogilby Road. Both travel directions have been switched to the I-8 eastbound lanes divided by k-rail. In addition, the westbound on- and off-ramps at Ogilby Road (exit 159) are closed to traffic. Signs have been placed to alert motorists to the ramp closures and to alternate routes.

The I-8 Corridor is a major pavement rehabilitation project consisting of five segments that will construct Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) over 48 miles on Interstate 8 in Imperial County. The work will result in a long-lasting superior roadway, capable of withstanding the heaviest traffic loads. Construction began in 2016 on three of the five segments. Work will be completed by 2019.

4th Avenue gateway — ADOT

ADOT is making improvements to the state facility at 4th Avenue and 1st Street. Lane restrictions are in place. The $773,000 improvement project will last approximately seven months. ADOT will add a right-turn lane and a 10-foot-wide, colored-concrete shared-use path from 1st Avenue along the east side of 4th Avenue to the existing Yuma Canal Bridge.
