AWC splits at home against Phoenix

Doubles’ win by Sock, Harrison puts U.S. in Davis Cup semis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Jack Sock and Ryan Harrison put the United States in the Davis Cup semifinals for the first time since 2012 by beating Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 5-7, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3), 6-4 Saturday to finish off an American sweep.

The United States now will play either Croatia or Kazakhstan in the semifinals Sept. 14-16.

John Isner and Sam Querrey set up the doubles match for the clincher by winning both their singles matches Friday at the Curb Events Center at Belmont University. Sock, who came in ranked 26th in doubles, and Harrison, 17th in the world, put the U.S. into the semifinals after taking three hours to finish off the Belgians.

The U.S. now is 5-0 all-time in the Davis Cup against Belgium.

JUCO SOFTBALL AWC softball splits

Arizona Western College softball split the day yesterday against Phoenix College (32-7, 28-6 ACCAC).

The Matadors (35-14, 29-9 ACCAC) fell in the opener 4-2, but were able to come back later that day to win 7-6. In the second game AWC nearly lost a five run lead, but held on in the end.

Koryne Coddington (148) recorded the loss for the Matadors in the first game. She allowed four runs on 10 hits.

In the Makenna second game Stram (19-6) earned the win by giving up six runs with five earned. She also had three strikeouts. AWC will be back on Tuesday at Yavapai College with a noon start.

JUCO BASEBALL AWC baseball sweeps Pima

Arizona Western College baseball kept rolling on Saturday with two wins over Pima (16-24, 8-22 ACCAC).

The Matadors (32-12, 16-8 ACCAC) won the opener 5-3 and the second game 10-4.

Ramon Miranda started in the first game by going 4 1/3 innings with three runs and four strikeouts.

Zach Hansen came into the game in relief for the win. Hansen (3-0) pitched 2 2/3 innings with five strikeouts.

Carlos Arellano was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Zach Huffins was 2-for-2 with a double.

Robert Gonzalez (4-0) earned the win in the second game over 3 innings. He allowed no runs and had three strikeouts.

Manny Perez led the team by going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a home run, and Snaider Torreable was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a steal.

AWC will be back on Tuesday at home against Scottsdale Community College. The doublehead­er begins at noon.

PREP BASEBALL Warriors go 3-1 at tourney

The San Pasqual baseball team beat Window Rock, 8-0, on Saturday to wrap up the Chandler Prep Invite with a 3-1 record. The Warriors also beat Scottsdale Christian on Thursday and Ash Fork on Friday.

Frankie Rodriguez led the Warriors at the tournament with seven hits, five for extra bases (three doubles, two triples).

San Pasqual resumes regular-season action Monday at home against Bagdad.
