Thumbs up, down from the Yuma Sun
• Thumbs up to the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, which recently ordered Far West Water and Sewer Co. to repair problems at four of its sewer lift stations in the Foothills. The order came about as part of an investigation into persistent odor complaints by residents, and hopefully, will address the longstanding concerns there.
• Thumbs up to Gov. Doug Ducey, who vetoed legislation last week, and included the message, “Please send me a budget that gives teachers a 20 percent pay raise by 2020 and restores additional assistance.” The governor vetoed 10 bills April 20th, which is one way to get his point across to legislators that he’s serious.
• Thumbs up to the Food Network’s “Great Food Truck Race,” which was in Yuma last weekend as part of the show’s race across America. Yum!
• Thumbs up to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122, which recently conducted its first flight operations in the F-35B Lightning II at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. It’s a major milestone, and awesome that it’s taking place in the skies above Yuma County. Congrats to the Flying Leathernecks!
• Thumbs up to the Yuma County Planning and Zoning Commission, which recently voted unanimously to allow a 5-acre medical marijuana cultivation site to the Hyder area. The business would bring much-needed jobs to the area, and has support from both Hyder and Dateland. The issue will next go to the Yuma County Board of Supervisors for a final vote.
• Thumbs up to the Cibola High softball team, which won the 6A Southern region title this week, after defeating Tucson High!
• Thumbs down to the news that dry weather and drought conditions will prolong the wildfire threat through the summer in the southwest. That news is indicative of several potential issues, from continued water challenges to the dangers wildfires present.
• Thumbs down to the ongoing dispute between Spectrum and Northwest Broadcasters. How is this even possible that the dispute is still continuing? The dispute started Feb. 2, and here we are, 85 days later, still without resolution. What a ridiculous situation.
Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down are compiled by the Yuma Sun editorial board, based on recent events, happenings and activities around Yuma County and the nation, and will appear on Fridays in the Yuma Sun.
