Continuance granted in bank robbery case

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

A continuance has been granted again for the attorney currently representing a man charged in connection to the armed robbery of a local branch of the National Bank of Arizona.

Attorney Richard Edgar represents, who represents Richard Howard Weigelt, requested a continuance Wednesday to review evidence in the case.

Superior Court Judge David Haws granted the request and scheduled Weigelt’s next hearing for 8:30 a.m. on May 9.

Haws had previously granted Edgar a continuance at Weigelt’s court hearing on March 28 after Edgar said that he had not received two pieces of evidence in the case, according to a previous article in the Yuma Sun.

Weigelt, 29, remains in custody in the Yuma County jail on a combined $55,000 bond. He has two cases against him that charge him with robbery, possession of a narcotic drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Previously, he had been represented by Raymond Vacca of the Yuma County Public Defenders office.

A past Yuma Sun article states that at Weigelt’s January hearing, Vacca told the court that plea offers were in the works that would resolve both cases.

Yuma police reported that on Dec. 7, the National Bank of Arizona located at 2415 S. Avenue A was robbed at approximately 4:02 p.m. by a man who implied he had a weapon.

YPS said that the initial investigation into the incident revealed the suspect, currently believed to be Weigelt, handed the bank teller a note, told her he had a gun and demanded money.

Officials with YPD said that no gun, however, was displayed.

After the teller handed the suspect an undisclosed amount of money, he fled east on 24th Street on foot.

Weigelt was arrested within six hours of the robbery and was found in the 700 block of 24th Street at 10 p.m. He was reportedly arrested without incident, police said.
