Fundraiser to aid local firefighter’s daughter battling breast cancer

- BY RACHEL TWOGUNS @RTWOGUNS

After giving birth, a local firefighter’s daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Miryea “Mimie” Bridges, 22, gave birth to her son Fisher on Feb. 17 of this year and a little over a month later on March 26, she was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, a type of breast cancer.

According to Bridges’ gofundme page created by her fiancé Andrew Cotton, she was told by her doctor on April 16 that her cancer is stage 4 and is incurable.

“It has spread to her lungs, stomach, liver, lymph nodes and bones,” the page states. “The (doctor) was unable to give (a) prognosis at this time as everyone responds to chemo(therapy) treatment differently.”

Cotton’s gofundme, created for Bridges, states that donations will be used for necessary medical procedures, to help pay for gas for trips to and from chemotherapy treatments as well as doctors visits, to help pay for any co-pays Bridges will need for treatment and medications and to help pay for bills as Cotton “is the only one working at this time.”

It is noted on the gofundme page that Cotton does not currently have a definitive figure that is needed, but funds will be used in Bridges’ battle against cancer. If there are remaining funds, they will benefit her son Fisher in the form of a bank account, the page says.

A car wash will be held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help raise funds for Bridges. The event will be at Fuel Fitness, 1335 S. Pacific Ave., Suite. 209.

Donations will be accepted at the car wash hosted by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local F142.

Additionally, raffle tickets will be sold and cost $20 each. Prizes include a three night stay at Elara Resort in Las Vegas, a $1,200 gift card to Sprague’s Sports, a one month membership at Fuel Fitness, a $500 gift card to Heuser Chiropractic and more.

One of the event organizers, Alex McNeely, noted that the fundraiser will be held to assist a fellow firefighter in his family’s time of need. He noted that while he does not know Bridges personally, he is acquainted with her father, Lonnie Bridges, who has been an MCAS Yuma Firefighter for a little over nine years.

“I can’t believe how much support we’ve been given, especially from IAFF Local F142,” Lonnie said.

Donations can also be made on Bridges’ gofundme page at www.gofundme. com/mimie039s-fight
