Araby Road, I-8 - ADOT starts May 16

Work on the second phase of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s construction for the Interstate 8 (I-8) and Araby Road traffic interchange improvement project is scheduled to start in May. ADOT is building the second roundabout at I-8 and Araby Road on the south side of the intersection. This phase of the project is scheduled for completion in the fall.

UPDATE: Starting on Wednesday, May 16, there will be a three-month closure of the eastbound I-8 off-ramp at Araby Road. The following day, Gila Ridge Road is scheduled to close for 30 days and Araby Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction for three months.

Yuma drivers should plan to use detour routes and allow extra travel time while the following restrictions are in place:

Beginning Wednesday, May 16, Gila Ridge Road west of Araby Road at the Tanimura and Antle Produce building will be closed in both directions for 30 days.

Araby Road will be reduced to one lane in both directions between 26th and 30th streets for three months beginning Thursday, May 17.

No left turns will be permitted on Gila Ridge Road while construction is underway. Drivers can access businesses on Gila Ridge Road using Avenue 3E.

An 11-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.

Alternative routes include Avenue 3E and 32nd Street. Drivers should plan for heavy traffic, reduced speed limits and delays. Information provided by ADOT.

4th Avenue at Catalina Drive

Traffic signal upgrades at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Catalina Drive will require the outage of that stoplight May 7-10. During that time, 4th Avenue traffic will move through the intersection without stopping, while Catalina Drive traffic will be regulated with stop signs. Individual lane closures will be in effect as the project moves from spot to spot. Those who wish to use the traffic signal to cross 4th Avenue should use 32nd Street or 28th Street.

3rd Avenue, 8th to 11th streets

Crews are nearing completion on the first phase of improvements to 3rd Avenue between 8th and 11th streets. With pavement work taking place, work could shift to phase two, south of 11th Avenue, as soon as this week. While no through traffic will be permitted, please note that access to local businesses in the area will be maintained and motorists may drive on the temporary surface to reach their destinations.

Avenue A and 32 Street CenturyLink

The eastbound to southbound turn lane from 32nd Street to Avenue A will be closed while CenturyLink conducts telephone line maintenance. Work should be complete by May 18.

Avenue B, 8th to 16th streets

Starting as early as May 21, crews will be replacing a vintage street main line requiring a lane closure on Avenue B, from 8th St. to 16th St. Signs will be posted to alert drivers of the upcoming closure as they approach the workzone.

24th Street, Arizona Avenue

Beginning as early as March 21, crews will be working near the intersection of 24th Street and Arizona Avenue for a project totaling no more than 60 days. The work will require a lane closure along 24th Street near its intersection with Arizona Avenue and will call for the speed limit to be reduced to 25 mph in the work zone.

Avenue 10E, 32nd-34th streets

Subdivision and street construction will affect Avenue 10E between 32nd Street and 34th Street. Detour using Payson Avenue. Work is scheduled to complete in late August.

24th Street, Avenue B

Crews will be doing overhead utility work near the southwest corner of 24th Street and Avenue B to replace a Spectrum (Time Warner Cable) fiber optic enclosure. Work is to take place between midnight and 6 a.m., and is to be completed by June 1. Some lane closures may be in place as needed for the project.

13th Street, 1st — 3rd avenues

There will be a full closure on 13th Street, between 1st and 3rd Avenues beginning on Thursday, May 3, as crews install a new sewer line and storm drain for the new fleet shop that is to be constructed in the area. Second Avenue will be closed at its intersection with 13th Street. There will be no left turn for southbound traffic on 3rd Avenue near its intersection with 13th Street. Access to businesses on 2nd Avenue will be maintained through 12th Street. The road will reopen on May 25.

I-8 west of 4th Ave. — Caltrans (updated)

Caltrans reopened all lanes on Interstate 8 (I-8), from just west of Ogilby Road to just west of State Route 186 (SR-186) in Winterhaven. Temporary lane closures during the daytime will occur throughout the month of May as needed for striping and signage as part of the final stages of Segment 5 of the I-8 Update Project in Imperial County.

Lane reductions and detours remain in place for Segment 4 of the Project. I-8 is reduced to one lane in each direction on a five-mile section from approximately 0.5 miles west of SR111 to 0.5 miles east of Barbara Worth Drive. The westbound ramps at Bowker Road will continue to be closed with the following detours in place:

Detour for Westbound I-8 to Bowker Road: Motorists will proceed west on I-8 and exit south on State Route 111 and access eastbound I-8 and exit Bowker Road.

Detour for Bowker Road to Westbound I-8: Motorists will proceed on Bowker Road and access eastbound I-8 and exit State Route 7 (Orchard Road) and access westbound I-8.

These closures, detours, and lane reductions for Segment 4 are anticipated to be in place through the end of the year with the majority of the road work being conducted during the day. Construction impacts include slower traffic flow and delays during peak travel times, particularly on Fridays from 3-7 p.m.

The I-8 Corridor is a major pavement rehabilitation project consisting of five segments that will construct Continuously Reinforced Concrete Pavement (CRCP) over 48 miles on Interstate 8 in Imperial County. The work will result in a long-lasting superior roadway, capable of withstanding the heaviest traffic loads. Construction began in 2016 on three of the five segments. Work will be completed by 2019.

4th Avenue gateway — ADOT

ADOT is making improvements to the state facility at 4th Avenue and 1st Street. Lane restrictions are in place. The $773,000 improvement project will last approximately seven months. ADOT will add a right-turn lane and a 10-ft. wide, colored-concrete shareduse path from 1st Avenue along the east side of 4th Avenue to the existing Yuma Canal Bridge. The project also includes upgrading and refurnishing existing lighting, installing signage, landscaping and rehabilitating the Yuma Crossing concrete historic land marker.
