DPS trooper injured after chase with a suspect in Flagstaff

FLAGSTAFF — Authoritie­s say a state trooper was injured during a confrontat­ion with a possibly intoxicate­d pedestrian walking on a highway about 22 miles north of Flagstaff.

Arizona Department of Public Safety officials say the incident occurred Monday night along U.S. 180 and the suspect is in custody.

They say 29-year-old Jorge Santana Esquivel of Flagstaff is being held on suspicion of possession of dangerous drugs and drug parapherna­lia, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a police officer and escape.

DPS officials say the trooper tried to arrest Esquivel but he fled on foot with the trooper in pursuit.

The chase led into the forest and the trooper lost his footing and fell, hitting his head on a log.

Another responding trooper made the arrest.

DPS says the trooper’s injuries aren’t life threatenin­g.

Tucson police: Man arrested in death of live-in girlfriend

TUCSON — Police in Tucson say a man has been arrested in connection with the death of his live-in girlfriend.

They say 21-year-old Joshua Hilaire is jailed on $1 million bond on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Family members of 18-year-old Rosaura Hernandez broke in to the couple’s apartment Sunday night after they were unable to contact her.

She was found unresponsi­ve and police declared her dead at the scene.

Police say Hernandez told family members she was fighting with her boyfriend Sunday afternoon and asked for a ride. Family members went to the couple’s residence twice, but there was no answer at the door.

They finally forced their way in about 7 p.m. and called police when they found Hernandez with signs of blunt force trauma.

Feds sending small number of officers to border

PHOENIX — The U.S. Department of Interior is sending officers to the southern border, although it’s unclear how many will be in Arizona.

The federal agency that oversees federal lands and Indian affairs is says it’s sending 22 law enforcemen­t officers to Arizona and Texas but won’t say how many will be in each state or where on the border they’ll be. The department manages 40 percent of land on the southern border.

The Arizona National Guard began deploying over 330 troops to the Arizona-Mexico border last month to assist the Border Patrol.
