Somerton to extend school day on Wednesdays to regain time
The last day of school for students in the Somerton District will remain as May 25.
The Somerton School District board made the decision at its meeting Tuesday evening, Superintendent Laura Noel said.
“They decided to make no change in the end of year activities for students,” Noel said.
Promotions for preschool, kindergarten and eighth grade will remain on their scheduled days.
Middle school students will need to make up half days on the two remaining Wednesdays. That day is currently an early release day, but the bell schedule will be extended to a full day in order for students to meet the state minimal minute requirements.
“All other grade levels will have met all minimal minute requirements with no change to the schedule or calendar,” Noel said.
Teachers, who sign contracts before the school year starts, will have six days added to the end of the calendar, she said.
“They will be working on a variety of projects to review data, prepare the standards for next year and plan instruction as well as a variety of Professional Development activities.
Parents and guardians who have additional questions or concerns should contact their school office.
“We will do our best to have answers,” Noel said.
