AWC sits within a win of Region championsh­ip

Another game and another blowout for the Arizona Western College baseball team.

The Matadors won their 14th game in a row on Thursday night with a 13-5 thrashing of South Mountain.

The win was game one in the Region I finals, and the bats kept going for AWC (46-13) over top-seeded South Mountain (45-14).

The Matadors had 15 hits in the game and that offense was led by Sean Roby again.

Roby hit two home runs in the game to put his season

AWC: S.MTN.:

total at 19. He finished 3-for-6 with six RBIs.

His home run in the top of the third inning put AWC up 3-1.

Zach Huffins tripled to drive in Carlos Arellano to start the fifth inning, and Roby came up to homer again and drive him in.

Huffins was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double, and Arellano was 3-for-5.

Three batters after Roby, Justin Greene homered to go ahead 8-2 after five innings.

Greene finished with two RBIs.

Irving Martin (8-2) got the win for AWC after going 6 1/3 innings with three earned and three strikeouts.

Fabian Muniz came into the game in relief for the final 2 2/3 innings with one earned and two strikeouts.

Conner Deeds (8-2) got the loss for South Mountain. Over 4 2/3 innings he allowed eight earned and 3-for-5 three home runs.

South Mountain was able to pull back into the game late at 9-5 going into the ninth inning, but the Matadors came back with a fourrun inning to win 13-5.

If AWC wins today the Matadors will move on to the Western District championsh­ip. The games will be played at the home field of the Region 18 winner

The four teams remaining in that district are the College of Southern Nevada, College of Southern Idaho, Utah State University Eastern and Salt Lake Community College.

AWC will play at 2 p.m. at South Mountain again.
