Local students take top honors in science fair

A Yuma High student is competing in the Intel Internatio­nal Science and Engineerin­g Fair this week after winning top honors in Tucson last month.

Several Yuma County students also took top honors and cash prizes for their science efforts at the Southweste­rn Arizona Research, Science and Engineerin­g Foundation event in mid-April at the Tucson Convention Center.

Yuma High’s Luis Florez Juarez is one of 12 Arizona students who advanced to the Intel Fair, which is going on through Friday in Pittsburgh, Pa. Yuma High was also recognized as a “top high school” for science and research by the foundation. Flores Juarez’s project is called “Arduino Navigation for the Visually Impaired and Elderly.”

Yuma students from AmeriSchoo­ls, Gowan Science Academy, Mesquite Elementary, Rancho Viejo. Woodard Junior High, Centennial Middle School, Crane Middle, Kofa High, Cibola, Kofa San Luis High School and Yuma High competed in the Tucson event, winning a variety of prizes.
