Kofa JSA chapter ends successful year at Spring Congress

Kofa High School’s Junior State of America chapter has once again been crowned Chapter of the Year for the state of Arizona.

The Kings JSA chapter was acknowledged as being the best chapter of the organization in the state after an active year organizing and competing at local events. In addition, Kofa also took home two trophies for best speakers, going to junior Justin Galvez and freshman Florencio De La Torre. Kofa Junior Joshua Garay was also installed as the JSA Governor for the state.

“Spring Congress was, in fact, the best mainly because we got to debate and have good discussions on certain topics,” KHS JSA member Oscar Ferguson said. “It was also a place to meet new people and hear some fresh voices from people you normally wouldn’t hear from.”

Chris Freebairn, another member of the chapter detailed the types of activities available to attendees. “Hearing other students’ bills interested me in the future of Arizona I want,” he said. “I was there to hear speakers giving their input on the bills and we vote if it passes or fails just like local, state, and federal government does. Amendments are created also. I love hearing other people’s perspectives and their evidence to back it up. You get to see what each person is like on the political spectrum.”

The Kofa chapter will move on to compete at JSA nationals in Los Angeles on June 10. As part of the submission process, they submitted a video montage, highlighting their 2017-18 accomplishments. The video is viewable on the Kofa JSA YouTube page.

San Luis High moves to single-track bell schedule in 2018-19

SAN LUIS, AZ – San Luis High School announced that they will utilize a single-track bell schedule beginning in the 2018-19 school year.

The school day will begin at 7:20 a.m. for all students with the final period of the day ending at 1 p.m. on Monday and 2:20 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. San Luis will continue to offer three lunch periods.

In previous years, San Luis used a double-track schedule with students starting and ending school at separate times depending on grade level and other factors. The switch to a single-track schedule is expected to improve the level of safety for students and staff; provide equitable student access to campus opportunities and systems of support, such as extra-curricular activities and academic interventions; and optimize the Professional Learning Community design and collaboration needs for faculty.

“The decision to potentially change the bell schedule has been a topic of discussion for well over a year now,” SLHS Principal Tammy Ray said. “I really believe we have a great plan in place that will offer not only a safer environment, but one that supports optimal outcomes for both our students and staff. This plan is the result of valued stakeholder feedback and dialogue.”

SLHS solicited feedback on multiple occasions from students, parents and staff regarding the schedule change.
