Pen-pricks

- BY ARGUS HAMILTON RON JONES KEITH STEWART MARGARET HOPPER

• A Little Caesars manager in Florida shot and killed a guy dressed up as a clown who attacked him with a pair of scissors in the restaurant. Reaction was swift. Starbucks just announced that scissors-wielding clowns are now welcome to use their restrooms without having to make a purchase.

• Starbucks closed all 8,000 coffee shops for racial sensitivity training Tuesday. They meant well. Management wants to ensure that every Starbucks employee knows the difference between race bias created by centuries of inequality and class bias created by Starbucks coffee prices.

That word “handicapped” is a word that when someone sees or hears it, I guess they think that you are stupid. Guess what? We are not, and we’re a lot smarter than you think. And there is another word I hate to hear and that is “retarded,” and that really ticks me off big time. Just because you see someone that is handicapped, that doesn’t make them stupid or anything else. Do you think that we asked to be in that condition? NO.

I know for a fact that there are people out there who think that you being handicapped you have to be a dummy, stupid or better yet some like to say “retarded.” And there are other ways to be handicapped, mentally and physically, and that’s being overweight and it’s not just what a person eats, but something else is going on and it could be medications a person may be taking, so don’t judge them or make fun of anyone that I mentioned.

My dad got on me when I was 9 or 10 years old when I made fun of a person who was overweight. My dad said you make fun of someone who has a physical condition you may wind up some day in the same condition that they are in or end up worse than what they are.

So stop and think before you put your mouth in gear, and don’t feel sorry for us. We don’t want your pity. Just treat us, the handicapped, like a normal person, and you can’t catch what a person has and we don’t bite. So next time you see someone like I mentioned say hi or say something nice or don’t start anything. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Thank you for listening. Re: The NFL and the anthem: Sorry, too little too late. They made their bed now let them sleep in it. I will continue to boycott the NFL until the players stand and respect our flag and the anthem. If they are so upset with the USA, let them go to some other country and get a multimillion dollar contract to play a game. They could try North Korea, Cuba or Venezuela.

In response to Alice Magana’s letter to the editor. I like the idea of only having mail delivery 5 days a week, that way it would give the workers Saturdays and Sundays off and those of us that are gone over the weekend don’t have to worry about our mail sitting in the mailbox for anybody to get into and take.

The one thing I don’t like is the fact that the post office keeps raising their rates, yet they can’t seem to get mail delivered to their proper addresses in a timely matter.

I have mailed packages from here in Yuma and from Winterhaven, both to Vancouver Washington and to Great Falls, Montana, and for some reason my packages always end up going to the East Coast before they are sent to the proper location. Why does this happen? It’s frustrating when you pay to have the items delivered in approximately 3 days and it’s not delivered for at least 2 weeks. I understand mistakes happen, but not on a continual basis.

Again I agree we should only have mail deliveries Monday through Friday and I realize there’s a lot of dedicated workers at the post office, but I also know there is no excuse for our packages being sent clear across the United States and taking a week or two to arrive to their destination. Anybody that works in the private sector that messes up as much as these post offices around here seem to do would not have a job for very long.

Maybe if they only had to work 5 days a week, they could get things figured out right the first time.

Another issue is you can never speak to anybody on the phone at the post office. The 1-800 number is nothing but a bunch of recordings, so basically if they mess up sending your packages, there’s nothing you can do about it.

When I did go to the Winterhaven post office I was told I’m not the only one that goes through this and there’s really nothing that can be done. Why is that? We’re paying for a service, yet the service is not being done in an adequate way.

Isn’t it time the post office did the job that we actually paid them to do?

Quit raising the cost of mailing things until you have workers who actually do their jobs right.
