County set to vote on medical pot facility permit

5-acre facility would be built near Hyder

- BY BLAKE HERZOG @BLAKEHERZOG

The Yuma County Board of Supervisors will have several zoning-related matters to vote on when it meets Monday, including a special use permit for a proposed 5-acre medical marijuana growing facility near the town of Hyder.

Kactus Kush Farms LLC is also seeking a zoning change and minor comprehensive plan amendment for the facility at County 17 1/2 Street North and the alignment of Avenue 74E. The site currently has rural zoning, but the county only permits marijuana cultivation in industrial-zoned districts.

However, the planned amendment to the county’s long-term land use document would be at odds with the surrounding area, according to the criteria set in the plan. Still, the county planning commission recommended approval of both land use changes and the special use permit at last month’s meeting.

A Kactus Kush representative said a 12,600-squarefoot pre-engineered metal building would be constructed to grow the marijuana, along with smaller kitchen and office facilities for staff on the site. The site plan includes two more buildings to be added with future growth.

The business would create 20 jobs initially, and eventually is expected to employ about 50 people, the representative said.

The meeting will begin 9 a.m. Monday at the Board of Supervisors’ auditorium at 198 S. Main St. Also on the agenda: • Rezoning a 10 acre property on Avenue 4E south of County 14 1/2 Street from Rural Area-10 acre minimum to Rural Area-5 acre minimum.

• Rezoning of 10 acres located south of County 17th Street and Avenue A from Rural Area-10 acre minimum to Suburban Site Built-2 acre minimum.

• Rezoning a 14,000 square-foot lot at 12754 E. 40th St. from manufactured home subdivision-10,000 square foot minimum to manufactured home subdivision-6,000 square foot minimum.

• A special use permit for automotive sales on a property at 2852 E. Highway 95.

• A special use permit for an accessory dwelling for a residence at 13561 S. Sierra Bonita Blvd.

• Discussion and direction on county employee compensation plans for the 2018-19 fiscal year.

• Discussion and direction on public road maintenance and acceptance of additional roadways into the county system.

• Rescinding the May 7 award of a bid on a countyowned parcel of land and auctioning a different property, after the successful bidder on the first property discovered they had bought a different property than what they wanted.

The meeting will be broadcast on the county’s cable channel, Yuma77, and webcast and available for later viewing at www. yumacountyaz.gov and the Yuma County Government Facebook page. Spanish subtitles are available for rebroadcasts.
