To help the local senior community with chronic health conditions, Sunset Community Health Center will be holding its inaugural Young at Heart Health and Informational Event.

“This is the first time Sunset Community Health Center will be holding an event like this one,” said Lucy Murrieta, community relations, outreach and eligibility director at SCHC in an email to the Yuma Sun. “This is event is intended to (help) seniors navigate the medical and social system and access resources that will benefit them directly. We are expecting at least 500 seniors. It is open to all ages — anyone is welcome to attend and receive medical screenings.”

Specially dedicated to all seniors and retirees, the event is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Cesar Chavez Cultural Center, 1051 N. Main St. in San Luis, Ariz.

Information on resources and programs available for seniors that will lend a helping hand in improving their overall quality of life will also be available.

“Unfortunately, many of our senior population don’t know of a service which may help improve their quality of life, not only physically but also their emotional wellness,” Murrieta said. “We have also noticed that many of our senior population don’t know how to navigate the system to access these services. That is why the agencies that will participate in this event currently have different programs/services that will provide these types of assistance.”

“We are going to offer key information on important changes coming up in AHCCCS and Medicare in which beneficiaries will be directly affected,” she added. “We will offer information on services/programs regarding access to hearing aids and screenings, vision testing, social security information, enrollment for electricity discount, rehabilitation services, caregivers, housekeeping, and enrollment services for long term care.”

Additionally, the event will aim to address chronic health conditions in seniors that can affect a person’s life. Free health screenings will be offered which cover glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, vision, bone density and more. Raffles for home improvement services and gift cards will also be held.

“We have a growing population of seniors in our community ... and we notice an existing need in getting our seniors informed about not only the medical services available, but also programs and social services that could contribute to improving their quality of life,” Murrieta said. “The majority of the funds for this events are coming directly from Sunset Community Health Center and (are) thanks to the support of the following sponsorsJS Construction Services LLC. JM Villas Construction LLC, Salcidos’s Accounting, Viking Air Inc. and La Campesina Radio Station 104.5.”
