A weekly list of city projects or encroachme­nt permits authorized by the city of Yuma affecting busy streets.

Araby Road, I-8 (ADOT)

Work on the second phase of the Arizona Department of Transporta­tion’s (ADOT) constructi­on for the Interstate 8 (I-8) and Araby Road traffic interchang­e improvemen­t project is scheduled to start in May. ADOT is building the second roundabout at I-8 and Araby Road on the south side of the intersecti­on. This phase of the project is scheduled for completion in the fall.

A three-month closure began May 16, of the eastbound I-8 off-ramp at Araby Road. Gila Ridge Road is scheduled to close through mid-June and Araby Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction for three months.

Yuma drivers should plan to use detour routes and allow extra travel time while the following restrictio­ns are in place:

• Gila Ridge Road west of Araby Road at the Tanimura and Antle Produce building was scheduled to be closed in both directions for 30 days.

• Araby Road is reduced to one lane in both directions between 26th and 30th streets for three months — as of May 17.

• No left turns will be permitted on Gila Ridge Road while constructi­on is underway. Drivers can access businesses on Gila Ridge Road using Avenue 3E.

• An 11-foot vehicle width restrictio­n will be in place.

Alternativ­e routes include Avenue 3E and 32nd Street. Drivers should plan for heavy traffic, reduced speed limits and delays. Informatio­n provided by ADOT.

Gila Street, 1st Street to Giss Parkway

Gila Street is currently closed between 1st Street and Giss Parkway through June 29, as part of a City of Yuma Capital Improvemen­t Program (CIP) project that will be carried out in three phases. The project includes work on Gila Street, Maiden Lane, and 3rd Street. Signs have been posted to block the roadway. Detours include Main Street and/or Madison Avenue. No through traffic is permitted between 1st Street and Giss Parkway on Gila Street.

Access will be maintained to the parking lot between Maiden Lane and Gila Street throughout the project. The second phase of the project will begin after the Fourth of July holiday, and the third phase is slated to begin in late August. The entire CIP project is slated to be complete by the end of September.

24th Street, 33rd Drive

Shoulder work will take place along west 24th Street near its intersecti­on with 33rd Drive as crews work on pothole utilities starting as early as June 14. The project is to be completed by July 6. Please obey posted speed limits and traffic control devices.

Palo Verde Street, 28th Ave. (Lakin Ave.)

In order to abandon a gas line at a location off of Palo Verde Street, a portion of the roadway will be closed near its intersecti­on with 28th Avenue (also known as Lakin Avenue). Palo Verde Street will remain open to through traffic but there will be a lane shift, a reduced speed limit and traffic control in place between 28th Avenue and Avenue 3E. Detours include 24th Street and/or 32nd Street, which can be accessed via Pacific Avenue or Avenue 3E. The project is to finish by the end of August at the latest.

4th-6th avenues, 18th-20th streets

A traffic control plan is in place between 4th Avenue and 6th Avenue, from 18th street to 20th Street. There is a full closure at the portion of 18th Street that began Monday, June 4, and will be in place through June 19 during the day time only, with 18th Street open in the evenings.

17th Street, 6th-7th avenues

On Tuesday, June 19, work will begin on 17th Street, requiring a full closure between 6th and 7th Avenue. The closure will only be set up during the day and 17th and 18th Street will not be closed at the same time. The work will be complete June 22.

27th Street, 4th-8th avenues

A project is underway to reconstruc­t and repave 27th Street between 4th and 8th avenues. It will finish by the end of June, lasting a total of 30 days. Work includes milling and repaving. The portion of 27th Street between 4th and 8th avenues will be completely closed to through traffic while work is underway. Detours include 26th and 28th streets. The contractor is to notify residents of the road work and to accommodat­e access to homes and businesses in the area.

8th Street, 21st Avenue — ADOT

An ADOT project to add a crosswalk for safer pedestrian crossing at 8th Street near 21st Avenue will begin as early as June 4. While crews are in the area, there will be lane closures along 8th Street. Signs will be posted to alert traffic of the lane reduction as they approach the area. Traffic is asked to please obey the posted speed limits and traffic signs. The project is to be completed by the end of July.

5th Avenue, 11th Street — CenturyLin­k

CenturyLin­k will be doing utility work along 5th Avenue, near its intersecti­on with 11th Street. The project aims to repair a telephone cable. No full road closure will be required. Traffic signs will be posted to alert drivers and motorcycli­sts to the shoulder work and lane shift in the area as crews work on the project. The bike lane will be closed.

31st Place, Avenue 7E

A project to access a manhole on the south side of east 31st Place will require trenching near its intersecti­on with Avenue 7E. The work will require a lane closure in the area. It is slated to begin as early as June 14, and will finish in 60 days. The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph in the area.

3rd Avenue, 8th to 11th streets

Crews are now working on the second (final) phase of improvemen­ts to 3rd Avenue between 11th Street and 14th Street. While no through traffic will be permitted, please note that access to local businesses in the area will be maintained and motorists may drive on the temporary surface to reach their destinatio­ns. Businesses and residents in the area have been notified of the work zone in advance. Traffic is asked to detour using 1st or 4th avenues, as 2nd Avenue is currently closed for another project. The restaurant located at the northeast corner of 3rd Avenue and 11th Street can still be accessed; the road to their parking lot is open although there are still “road closed to through traffic,” the business is open and accessible. This second phase of work is part of the 3rd Avenue Capital Improvemen­t Program (CIP) project and will last approximat­ely 90 days.

Avenue B, 8th-16th streets (updated)

A project on Avenue B, between 8th and 16th streets, will begin on Monday, June 18. Crews will begin on the area between 12th and 16th streets along Avenue B first. Work will not require full road closures, but will have lane shifts and reduced lanes in place. All traffic control will be set up during the work shift only. The project in its entirety will take approximat­ely three months to complete.

Avenue 10E, 32nd-34th streets

Subdivisio­n and street constructi­on will affect Avenue 10E between 32nd Street and 34th Street. Detour using Payson Avenue. Work is scheduled to be complete in late August.

24th Street, Arizona Avenue

Beginning as early as March 21, crews will be working near the intersecti­on of 24th Street and Arizona Avenue for a project totaling no more than 60 days. The work will require a lane closure along 24th Street near its intersecti­on with Arizona Avenue and will call for the speed limit to be reduced to 25 mph in the work zone. The work is to be completed by the fall.

20th Street, 4th Ave. to Arizona Ave. (updated)

Road closures, lane closures and detours are to be in place as crews replace a steel main line and more than 11,000 feet of service pipe on 20th Street, between 4th and Arizona avenues. Traffic control devices will be set up in the area to help guide traffic through the work zone, as the project will require lane shifts and some sidewalk closures. The project is anticipate­d to finish by the end of July.

Arizona Avenue, 20th-22th streets

A lane along Arizona Avenue will be closed between 20th and 22nd streets for a total of 10 days, starting as early as Jun. 11. The roadway will remain open but the lanes will be reduced. A slower speed limit will also be in place.

Ave. B, 32nd Street to Ave. 12E (Yuma County)

Yuma County will be applying a crack seal layer along a portion of Avenue B, from 32nd Street to Avenue 12E. The work will take a total of two days and is anticipate­d to start Monday, Jun. 11.

County 12th Street Bridge, near Ave. D — (ADOT)

Starting as early as Monday, June 11, ADOT crews will close County 12th Street’s bridge west of Avenue D. The project is to remove and replace the existing Yuma County bridge. Additional work includes new pavement, pavement markings and other work. The project will be underway for several months and is expected to be complete by fall 2018. Drivers and agricultur­al workers should use detour routes and allow extra travel time while work is underway. No left turns will be permitted west of County 12th Street at Avenue D.

Detours include County 11th Street and/or Somerton Avenue. Local traffic will be permitted east of Somerton Avenue. Farmland will be accessible; signing will guide agricultur­e workers through detour routes. Drivers are asked to slow down and obey posted traffic control devices.
