New business in Yuma is terrific addition to area

Spice company’s decision brings many benefits to community

- GLORIA RUBE RUTH DECKER

Any time a business decides to come to Yuma County, it’s good news.

Botanical Food Company, also known as Gourmet Garden, is investing $38.5 million for land, building and equipment at a facility to be located at the Yuma Commerce Center, 7800 E. 38th St. Part of the McCormick & Company family, the facility is expected to be fully operational by 2020.

This is a very big announcement for Yuma.

The company plans to bring 89 full-time jobs to the community, with an average annual salary of $43,270, which is 26 percent above the county’s average wage.

But the economic impact stretches past the jobs.

The Greater Yuma Economic Development Corp. estimates that in a three-year period, there will be a $1.14 million impact in new direct local tax revenues, including more than $358,000 in property and sales tax revenue to the city. The county and school district are estimated to receive more than $782,000 from direct tax revenues during the three years.

The total economic contribution over three years, including secondary impacts to local businesses, is estimated at more than $95.6 million. That is tremendous. Any time a new industry moves to Yuma County, it is a win for our community. A new business opening means new jobs, new tax dollars and more people with disposable income in the community – which in turn means more people spending time and money at local businesses and restaurants.

Gourmet Garden focuses on organically grown herbs that have been washed, chopped and prepped within 18 hours of harvesting, according to the McCormick website.

The Yuma operation will be a production facility, and the first building that McCormick has built in more than 40 years. And, given the fact that the company is in the agriculture industry, building in Yuma makes perfect sense. Our region embraces agriculture and its related industries.

McCormick is a terrific addition to the Yuma community. Hopefully, their decision inspires other companies to follow suit.

DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS OR NOT?

What a wonderful tribute to Somerton (Southwest Living). Growing up there 1946-1968, it was “Town of Somerton.” All has changed for the best! I love all the articles – I was able to relate to all of them! Thank you so much for bringing back memories from the past! I love it!

Many thanks to Scout Troup 8305 and their leaders for the beautiful flag display at St. John Neumann Church. It was a very impressive and thoughtful tribute to our veterans for Memorial Day. It was much appreciated for all the hard work that went into the project. Thank you again.
