Assault suspect arrested over weekend
A San Luis, Ariz., man sought in connection with an assault that happened late last week was arrested Sunday inside a grocery store.
According to Yuma County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Alfonso Zavala, at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday deputies responded to a report of an assault in the 400 block of S. May Avenue.
Once on scene deputies learned that the suspect, now identified as 28-year-old Raul Tejeda, had allegedly forced his way into the victims residence, threatening to kill her and assaulting her multiple times. The victim was later able to escape and called law enforcement.
YCSO said that Tejeda was attempting to flee the area in his red 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee as deputies arrived on scene and purposely collided with the driver side door of a marked YCSO patrol truck.
Zavala said that on Sunday, at approximately 11:54 a.m., Yuma police received a tip that Tejeda had been spotted at the Del Sol Market, located at 280 S. 4th Avenue.
Yuma police responded and contacted YCSO about the sighting. A perimeter was set-up around the store and Tejeda was taken into custody a short time later without incident.
“(Tejeda) was found inside the store hiding in an employee bathroom,” Zavala said.
He was booked into the Yuma County jail on multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault, criminal trespassing and unlawful flight from law enforcement. A cash-only bond of $300,000 has been set.
