Divorce and child custody are topics of free seminar
Child custody and the divorce process will be among the topics discussed at a free informational seminar today. The Yuma County Law Library and Conciliation Court Services are hosting the seminar.
The seminar, which is being put on in collaboration with the Yuma County Bar Association, Community Legal Services and the Clerk of the Superior Court and others, is scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Law Library Conference Room.
The Law Library is located inside the Historic Courthouse at 168 S 2nd Ave., Suite L. The entrance to the Law Library is next door through the Yuma County Justice Center, located at 250 W. 2nd St., Suite A.
James Marshall, senior counsel for Community Legal Services, will be the presenter again and will provide general information about divorce, paternity, parenting and visitation, and child custody proceedings in Yuma County Superior Court.
The clinic will be given in English with a Spanish interpreter present, and forms will be distributed at the end of the seminar.
Held monthly, the free and informal clinics cover a variety of legal matters such as legal guardianship, having a felony conviction “set aside,” child support and adoption.
The seminars are part of a series of sessions offered by the Law Library designed to assist self-represented litigants with various types of cases.
While no legal advice will be given, those who attend will also receive helpful information on topics such as what resources are available in the community and what forms are necessary to fill out. They will also receive answers to general questions about the court process and procedures.
The free seminars are designed to assist people who need basic legal help but don’t have the money to hire an attorney, or want to do it themselves, but aren’t sure how.
According to organizers, providing help to selfrepresented litigants offers a valuable service to the court system. Organizers say this is because the litigants often have difficulty preparing and filing documents and meeting procedural requirements, which can cause delays in their cases.
Although advance registration is not required, it is recommended. Anyone interested in attending can call the Law Library at (928) 817-4165 for more information.
