1 in custody after early-morning drive-by shooting

- BY JAMES GILBERT @YSJAMESGILBERT

Yuma police have one person in custody following an early morning driveby shooting on Wednesday that happened in the 300 block of S. 17th Avenue.

There were no reports of any injuries.

Sgt. Lori Franklin said that officers responded to the location at approximately 5:16 a.m. in reference to a report of shots being fired.

The initial investigation, according to Franklin, showed there were two vehicles involved, and that the victim’s vehicle had collided with a pole.

“One of the vehicles had damage from the shooting, which is why we believe he is the victim,” Franklin said.

After crashing into the pole, the driver fled the scene on foot.

“Someone in the area tried to stop him, but he pointed a gun at them,” Franklin said.

Franklin said the driver got rid of the handgun shortly before illegally entering a residence in the 200 block of Magnolia Avenue.

When confronted by the homeowner, the driver left the residence and was taken into custody. He was later booked into Yuma County Detention Facility on multiple charges.

The case is currently under investigation, but no description is available of the other vehicle that was involved.

“There are witnesses who heard the shots but they didn’t see anything except the car that had crashed into the pole,” Franklin said.
