Health center to host celebration at MLK center Aug. 18

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

As part of National Health Center Week, Sunset Community Health Center (SCHC) will host a Health Care Heroes celebration at the end of next week.

The event will be held at the Martin Luther King Youth Career Center, 300 S. 13th Ave., from 8 am to noon on Saturday, Aug. 18.

According to a SCHC news release, the event is part of a national campaign during the week of Aug. 12-18 to raise awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s Health Centers and the “dedicated staff who bring health care to the medically underserved over the past five decades.”

The theme for this year’s National Health Center Week is “Celebrating Health Centers: Home of America’s Health Care Heroes.”

Those within the community are invited to celebrate health care heroes or individuals “who live and breathe the health center mission and go above and beyond the call of duty to support the health center in providing quality health care for patients in the community,” SCHC officials say.

During the event, SCHC will offer free health screenings such as glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, vision, as well as facilitating access to important resources available in Yuma County.

SCHC will celebrate with music and opportunities to win prizes, including 20 brand new bikes as an effort to promote physical activity among kids and adults.

Additionally, the first 200 children to arrive will receive baggies with back to school supplies. There will also be chances to enter and win tickets to the San Diego Zoo and San Diego Safari.
