Trout goes on 10-day DL with inflamed right wrist

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Star outfielder Mike Trout was put on the 10-day disabled list Friday because of an inflamed right wrist, a move that Los Angeles Angels had hoped to avoid.

Manager Mike Scioscia sounded confident that Trout’s stay on the DL would not be extended beyond the minimum time. The Angels head out on a road trip to San Diego and Texas after the weekend.

“We anticipate him being back when his DL is up,” Scioscia said. “Definitely in Texas he is going to play (Thursday), so most likely he will travel (to San Diego). The treatment he is getting is easy to administer.”

The move was retroactive to Monday, when Trout received a cortisone injection in his wrist. The two-time AL MVP has missed seven consecutive games.

The 27-year-old Trout is batting .309 with 30 home runs and 60 RBIs. He leads the majors with a .459 on-base percentage.

Trout hasn’t played since Aug. 1, when he hurt his wrist during a feet-first slide into third base in Tampa Bay.

Trout was out for 39 games last season after tearing a ligament in his left thumb in a headfirst slide.

Scioscia initially didn’t think Trout would need to go on the DL. He said Friday there should be no long-term ramifications from the injury.

Redskins RB Guice out for season with torn ACL

Washington Redskins rookie running back Derrius Guice is out for the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee, a significant blow to the ground game.

Guice was injured in Washington’s preseason opener at New England on Thursday night and could be seen on the sideline with ice on his knee. The team announced the prognosis Friday following an MRI, saying Guice should make a full recovery and be ready to play in 2019.

Guice was expected to be the Redskins’ starter after they selected him 59th overall in the draft. The LSU product was considered a first-round prospect and fell amid reports of character concerns before being taken late in the second.

Former Tour champ Ullrich arrested over alleged attack

BERLIN — Former Tour de France champion Jan Ullrich was arrested early Friday and is being investigated for attempted manslaughter after allegedly attacking an escort at a Frankfurt hotel.

“It seems Mr. Ullrich and an escort woman had a dispute and that he attacked her,” Frankfurt police spokesperson Carina Lerch said. “She alerted the hotel staff and they called police.”

Lerch said the retired German cyclist was under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

The 31-year-old woman needed medical treatment. Lerch said no further details could be given on her condition while police were investigating.

Later, a police statement said Ullrich had resisted arrest.

“As part of the police interrogation, the woman provided extensive information on the attacks of the accused. The accused so far makes use of his right to refuse to testify,” the statement said.

“Currently, the accused is being investigated for attempted manslaughter and dangerous assault. The investigation has not yet been completed.”
