This Saturday, community members are invited to not only come out for a night of football, but help support a local teen battling leukemia.

Proceeds from the Yuma Catholic (YC) varsity football home game on August 18 will benefit Nicole Laughlin as she copes with the illness. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at the school located at 2100 W. 28th St.

Tickets cost $5 each for adults and $3 each for students over 12. The YC varsity football season opener will be played against San Manuel High school from Pinal County.

According to YC principal Rhett Stallworth, the 15-year-old sopho-

leukemia, a cancer of the early blood-forming cells, at the beginning of this month. The American Cancer Society website shows that while leukemia is the most common cancer in children and teens, accounting for almost one out of three cancers, childhood leukemia is a rare disease overall.

Currently, Laughlin’s family has been transporting her to a Phoenix hospital to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

“She’s your typical teenage kid,” Stallworth said. “She’s a great, vibrant kid, full of life. This is a very serious and very scary moment in her life and we are all pulling for her and praying for her. We know we

can’t do it all, but we know that we can do a few things that can just help ease some of the burden on the family as they are going back and forth to Phoenix for treatment and all those things.”

He added that the cancer has spread to Laughlin’s lymph nodes and to her spine.

“Right now she’s under heavy chemo,” Stallworh said. “She’s in a battle, there is no doubt about it.”

Stallworth noted that in addition to the proceeds from gate admission, any other monetary donations will also be accepted at the game on behalf of Laughlin’s family.
