Media responsible for Trump’s election

-

I find the editorial of Thursday 8/16/18 to be so simplistic as to be misleading. It is without question that journalism is to disseminate information. The question is, how is the information presented. Trump’s attacks on the media was cited as a reason to defend journalism but what was not mentioned was the relentless attacks of the media against Trump even before he became an official candidate. In my opinion which doesn’t necessarily have all the facts, but as an observer, the media made Trump president by giving him all the headlines and not giving more space to other candidates who may have been more worthy but weren’t included in the public debate. My own opinion is that the media gave Trump all the headlines so people wouldn’t look too closely at Hillary and the two or three decades of scandals and cover-ups of the Clintons. In their assessment that Trump was unelectable they kept the spotlight off of Hillary thinking Trump couldn’t win and Hillary was the only other choice.

As to how information is disseminated, if we consider the Scope’s trial that changed the whole educational system of the United States so that evolution was the only option to be taught as to origins, we see an editorial bias with far reaching affects. During the trial, the defender of the creation model of beginnings was widely ridiculed in the media of the day. The only evidence presented for the evolutionist’s claims was said to be the prehistoric tooth of a man said to be millions of years old. The evidence carried the day.

A year later the jaw that the tooth came from was found and it was found to be the jaw of a pig. Although the results of the previous year’s debate made drastic changes to our educational system which impacts us today, this information was not considered newsworthy. We still have an educational system that will not allow serious debate of alternative explanations. JIM RICKABAUGH Yuma
