Balk-off: Mariners beat Dodgers on Floro’s flinch
SEATTLE — Cameron Maybin scored with one out in the 10th inning when Los Angeles’ Dylan Floro was called for a balk, giving the Seattle Mariners a 5-4 win over the Dodgers on Saturday night.
Seattle loaded the bases with one out, and with a one-strike count on Kyle Seager, Floro initiated his delivery before stepping off the mound. First base umpire Andy Fletcher called him for the game-ending balk. There was little argument from Floro, although Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts sought an explanation as Seattle celebrated the odd victory.
Seattle led 4-1 entering the eighth inning, but Justin Turner, Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy all hit solo home runs to force extra innings. Seattle improved to 12-1 in extra-inning games this season.
Mitch Haniger led off the 10th with a line-drive single to right on the first pitch from Caleb Ferguson (3-2). Maybin hit into a fielder’s choice. Robinson Cano followed with an infield single, but Brian Dozier’s diving stop of the grounder kept Maybin from reaching third.
Floro entered and walked Nelson Cruz to load the bases before his mistake.
Muncy’s clubbed a 3-2 fastball from closer Edwin Diaz into the right-field seats with one out in the ninth. It was Muncy’s 28th homer of the season and second in as many days. It was the fourth homer allowed this season by Diaz, who ended a streak of converting 28 consecutive save opportunities. Diaz leads the majors with 47 saves, with four blown chances.
Georgia frosh Zamir White suffers another ACL injury
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia freshman tailback Zamir White suffered his second anterior cruciate ligament injury in less than a year Saturday, likely ending his hopes of playing this season.
Georgia confirmed tests showed White tore the ACL in his left knee injury in a scrimmage at Sanford Stadium.
Coach Kirby Smart said White was hurt during a special teams play.
“Zamir was on punt coverage and it was a non-contact injury,” Smart said.
White, from Laurinburg, North Carolina, tore his right ACL during the playoffs of his 2017 senior season in high school. He enrolled at Georgia early for spring practice and received praise from Smart for his rigorous rehabilitation.
Yuma Catholic’s opening game was over about the moment its opponent got off of the bus on Saturday night.
The Shamrocks didn’t waste any time by putting a 55-0 drudging on to San Manuel, with all 55 points coming in the first half.
Once the clocked turned into the second half YC was able to substitute openly and move some players around.
“I’m pleased with what the ones did when they got out there,” YC coach Rhett Stallworth said. “They executed well and did everything that they were supposed to do. They maybe had a hiccup here or there.”
Seven of the eight YC touchdowns came through the air with Gage Reese finding his receivers nearly at will. Reese finished the game 9-for-12 with 337 yards and a pick.
He found J.R. Henderson only 22 seconds into the game on a nine-yard slant route to go up 7-0, and from there YC was off to the races. Henderson also had a big game with four catches for 155 yards and three touchdowns.
“We stayed motivated and we just focused on us knowing that we have tough coming up on the schedule,” Reese said. “We stayed mentally focused. We didn’t focus on the other team, but we focused on getting ourselves better.”
