SHAMROCKS

-

Less than two minutes late in the game Reese found Ean Chavez on a 66-yard pass, and only 17 seconds later he found Zach Hunter from 30 yards out. Chavez finished the game with two catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns.

At the 2:38 mark of the first quarter Reese connected with Rakai Malone from 34 yards to put the team up 41-0. It took YC 13 plays from scrimmage to score 41 points.

After a 70-yard punt return touchdown by Zaire Riley and another passing touchdown from Reese to Henderson, the Shamrocks took a 55-0 lead into the half. Riley would also end up being the Shamrocks’ leading rusher in the game with two carries for 36 yards.

San Manuel struggled to get anything going on offense. The Miners had 30 yards of offense in the first half and 90 in the game. They were able to make a couple of drives in the second half, largely aided by YC penalties. On one drive they were able to get the ball down to the YC 5-yard line, but ended up turning the ball over on downs.

“We got everybody else in the game and some of them showed why they were in the second team,” Stallworth said. “It wasn’t pretty in the second half. It was sloppy. We’re working on it and we need to make sure that we still pay attention to detail.”

Yuma Catholic will see the speed of the game increase next week when it visits perennial powerhouse Northwest Christian (1-0). Northwest Christian’s only regular season loss in 2017 was to the Shamrocks.

“They better pack a lunch,” Stallworth said of his players. “The coaches can start on film. At the end of the day they better pack a lunch and get ready, because it’s going to be as tough as it comes.”
